The Best Wellness Retreats in Wisconsin, From a $90 Lakeside Room to a Five-Star Spa

The best wellness retreats in Wisconsin split into two very different kinds of place. On one side are the spa resorts: Kohler on the Lake Michigan shore, Elkhart Lake's Osthoff and an adults-only pine forest outside Wisconsin Dells, where the draw is water, treatments and being looked after. On the other are the religious and contemplative houses run by Benedictine, Dominican and Franciscan communities, where a room costs a fraction as much and the draw is quiet. Every place below was checked against its own website in September 2026 to confirm it is still operating.

The spa retreats

1. Kohler Waters Spa at The American Club, Kohler

For: the most polished spa experience in the state. Kohler's resort village, an hour north of Milwaukee, describes Kohler Waters Spa as its "five-star flagship spa designed to awaken the senses with the restorative power of water". Around it sit Yoga on the Lake classes, indoor cycling, wellness packages and themed wellness retreats, plus 500 acres of private land for hiking and kayaking. It is also a golf resort with Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run, so weekends can feel busy. For a quieter stay, pick midweek and a wellness package rather than a golf one.

2. Canoe Bay, Chetek

For: couples who want privacy and nature more than a treatment menu. Canoe Bay sits on 300 acres of hardwood forest in northwestern Wisconsin with three spring-fed glacial lakes, the largest being 50-acre Lake Wahdoon, about two hours from the Twin Cities. It is adults only and bills itself as the only Relais & Châteaux property in the upper Midwest. Wellness here means spa cottages with saunas and whirlpool tubs, in-cabin massage and a lake at the door, rather than a structured program.

3. Sundara Inn & Spa, Wisconsin Dells

For: a spa stay with rules that protect the calm. Sundara is an adults-only destination spa in a 26-acre pine forest on the edge of Wisconsin Dells, a short drive from the waterparks but a world away from them. It describes itself as adult-only, smoke-free and cell phone-free. Stays include access to indoor and outdoor pools and complimentary fitness classes, with treatments booked on top.

4. Aspira Spa at The Osthoff Resort, Elkhart Lake

For: a lakeside spa break that also works for a mixed group. The Osthoff is an AAA Four Diamond resort on the shore of Elkhart Lake, with one-, two- and three-bedroom suites. Aspira Spa has a salt room and contrast therapy, and builds its treatments around nature. It is a family resort too, so this is the pick when not everyone in the party wants a retreat. Note that the resort's indoor pool and whirlpool are closed from September 28 to October 16, 2026; the outdoor pool stays open and heated.

The contemplative retreats

5. Siena Retreat Center, Racine

For: the best-value solo retreat in the state. Run in the spirit of the Racine Dominican Sisters, whose motherhouse shares the campus, Siena sits on the Lake Michigan shore with walking paths, an outdoor labyrinth and lake access. Individual retreats cost $90 per person per night in a private room with its own bathroom, with meals at $11 for breakfast, $16 for lunch and $14 for dinner. One-to-one spiritual guidance is available on a sliding scale of $50 to $75 a session. Book at least 72 hours ahead, or seven days if you want meals. The center also runs a calendar of group retreats, including centering prayer weeks.

6. Holy Wisdom Monastery, Middleton

For: a short contemplative stay ten minutes from Madison. An ecumenical Benedictine community on County Road M, with a retreat and guest house for personal retreats, space for groups, spiritual guidance and workshops including mindfulness-based stress reduction. The grounds include the community's restored prairie. Its guiding line comes from the Rule of Benedict: "All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ." Rates are available on enquiry.

7. Christine Center, Willard

For: genuine solitude. Founded in 1980 and rooted in Franciscan principles, the Christine Center in rural Clark County offers personal and guided retreats, sabbaticals, spiritual guidance and hermitages in the woods. It suits people who want several days alone rather than a program. It takes bookings by phone and email rather than through a booking engine.

How to choose

  • If you want to be pampered, pick Kohler for polish, Sundara for enforced quiet, or Canoe Bay for privacy. Budget for treatments on top of the room.
  • If you want to slow down cheaply, Siena's $90 room on Lake Michigan is hard to beat, and Holy Wisdom is the easiest to reach from Madison.
  • If you want silence, the Christine Center's hermitages are the closest thing in the state to a solitary retreat. Our guide to what a silent retreat involves explains how to prepare.
  • If you are going in winter, check road access to the rural centers and whether programs run a reduced schedule. Snow makes the contemplative houses quieter still.
