The Best Wellness Retreats in West Virginia, From Warm-Spring Baths to a Forest Monastery
The best wellness retreats in West Virginia grew up around water. Long before anyone used the word wellness, people traveled to the state's mineral springs to bathe and rest, and two of its great resorts still sit on top of them: the public bathhouses of Berkeley Springs in the Eastern Panhandle, and The Greenbrier at White Sulphur Springs in the south. Around them are an all-inclusive family resort built on another spring, a mountain spa resort, and a Theravada Buddhist forest monastery where you can join a meditation retreat on a donation basis. This guide covers seven places and what each is best for. Every place was checked on 6 October 2026, against its own website wherever the site would load.

Berkeley Springs: America's first spa town
Berkeley Springs, a two-hour drive from Washington DC, has been drawing visitors to its warm springs since colonial times, and its springs attracted George Washington to the area. The town is small, walkable and full of massage studios, galleries and cafés, which makes it the easiest weekend wellness trip in the state.
Berkeley Springs State Park, Berkeley Springs
The heart of the town is Berkeley Springs State Park, a small state-run park built around the springs, where the mineral water flows at a constant 74.3°F all year. It has two bathhouses, both open year-round:
- The Old Roman Bath House, where you book a private Roman bath holding 750 gallons of spring water heated to 102°F. Reservations are recommended on (304) 258-3976.
- The Main Bath House, home to the park's spa, offering therapeutic, deep tissue and hot stone massages of 60 or 90 minutes, couples massages with a shared Roman bath, reflexology, cupping, sauna add-ons and spa packages. Book on (304) 258-2711.
You can also fill a bottle with spring water from the public taps for free. Book baths well ahead for weekends; they sell out. The park posts its spa menu with current prices on its website.
The Country Inn of Berkeley Springs
The Country Inn has been open year-round since 1933 and sits right by the warm springs and downtown. It has 60 rooms and suites, English gardens, the Rustic Morgan Tavern restaurant and its own Renaissance Spa. Stay here, book a Roman bath at the park, and you can walk between the two.
Cacapon Resort State Park, near Berkeley Springs
About ten miles south of town, Cacapon Resort State Park has a lodge, cabins, golf and hiking trails on Cacapon Mountain. It has no spa of its own, but it is a quieter and usually cheaper base for a Berkeley Springs bath weekend, with forest walks in place of a high street.
Capon Springs and Farms, Hampshire County
Capon Springs and Farms grew around a mineral spring discovered in the 1760s. Its 19th-century Mountain House Hotel burned in 1911, and the resort was rebuilt from the 1930s by Louis Austin; it is still owned by the Austin family and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it is an all-inclusive resort on around 4,700 acres, where the per-person rate covers your room, three meals a day and a full program of activities, while golf and spa treatments are extra.
It feels more like a summer camp for adults and families than a spa hotel, and that is the point: hiking, swimming, the spring water, and very little to do but rest. It is seasonal, opening in late April (30 April in 2026) and closing in early November, so check dates before you plan an autumn visit.
The Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs
The Greenbrier has been welcoming guests since 1778 and calls itself America's Resort. It is a National Historic Landmark on 11,000 acres, and its spa builds its signature treatments around the White Sulphur Springs mineral water that first brought visitors here. Beyond the spa there are classes in the fitness center, golf, mountain trails, and a tour of the declassified Cold War bunker built under the hotel for Congress.
For a structured retreat, the West Virginia studio Yoga Power is holding a yoga weekend at The Greenbrier from 13 to 15 November 2026, with aquatic, aerial, yin and sound bath sessions. The organizer lists a room rate of $259 a night for single or double occupancy, with classes sold separately, from $40 for one class to $249 for an unlimited pass.
The Resort at Glade Springs, Daniels
Near Beckley in the southern mountains, The Spa at Glade Springs is part of a golf and mountain resort, and it is open to the public, so you do not need a membership. It offers massages, facials, body treatments and wellness classes, and is open Tuesday to Sunday. It pairs well with the New River Gorge, within an hour's drive, for a mix of hiking and spa days.
Bhavana Society, High View
For a retreat that is about the mind rather than the body, the Bhavana Society is a Theravada Buddhist forest monastery and meditation center in the hills of Hampshire County, founded in 1982 by the Sri Lankan monk Bhante Henepola Gunaratana, author of Mindfulness in Plain English. Lay visitors can join meditation retreats and stay for non-retreat visits. Like most monasteries in this tradition, it runs on dana, or donation, rather than fixed fees. Retreat registration opens at noon one month before each retreat starts, and places go quickly. The monastery also streams weekend talks and meditation sessions online.
Expect a simple, quiet routine: early mornings, sitting and walking meditation, and periods of silence. It is not a spa, and that is its value. Our guide to the best Buddhist retreats in the USA covers similar centers in other states.
