The Best Wellness Retreats in Rhode Island: Four Picks, From a Zen Temple Stay to a Five-Star Ocean Spa

The best wellness retreats in Rhode Island come in two very different kinds. On the coast, a handful of grand inns in Watch Hill, Weekapaug and Newport pair ocean views with spas, yoga and quiet. Inland, in Cumberland north of Providence, the Providence Zen Center is the head temple of the Kwan Um School of Zen, with silent retreats and simple temple stays that cost a fraction of a coastal room. Here are four places worth the trip, checked against their own websites in October 2026.

Five-star spa: Ocean & Harvest Spa at Ocean House, Watch Hill, 12,000 square feet with a saltwater lap pool.

Cheapest stay: Providence Zen Center temple stays from $75 to $130 a night with breakfast.

Daily yoga: Weekapaug Inn lists an 8:30am class, free to hotel guests and $25 for day visitors.

Silent retreats: one-day sits for beginners up to the 90-day winter Kyol Che in Cumberland.

1. Ocean House, Watch Hill

Ocean House sits high on the bluffs at 1 Bluff Avenue in Watch Hill, the southwestern tip of the state, with the Atlantic in front of it. Its Ocean & Harvest Spa covers 12,000 square feet, and the hotel says it is the only Forbes Five-Star spa in Rhode Island. Treatments draw on the sea and the seasons, and the wellness side goes beyond the treatment rooms: a fitness center, a movement studio with complimentary yoga and Pilates classes, a saltwater lap pool with ocean views and a small salon. Treatments run daily from 9am to 6pm, with the spa desk and locker rooms open an hour either side. Book treatments in advance on 401-584-7070, ideally when you book the room, because weekend slots go first. Details at oceanhouseri.com.

2. Castle Hill Inn, Newport

Castle Hill Inn stands on its own 40-acre peninsula at 590 Ocean Drive, at the mouth of Narragansett Bay, with the Castle Hill Lighthouse (lit since 1890) and walking trails on the grounds. It is a Relais & Châteaux property, and its spa, The Retreat at Castle Hill by Farmaesthetics, is small by design: treatments take place in a private suite in the mansion, using Farmaesthetics products made from organically grown herbs and flowers from American family farms. Farmaesthetics is a Rhode Island company founded by Brenda Brock. The inn also offers massage and facials, meditation, an outdoor "Forest Gym" and in-room fitness. Guest yoga with teachers from Thames Street Yoga runs on Saturdays at 9am at the beach cabana, but only from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Ocean Drive runs past the gate, and Newport's Cliff Walk is a short drive away. See castlehillinn.com.

3. Weekapaug Inn, Westerly

A few miles east of Watch Hill, the Weekapaug Inn is a smaller coastal inn that suits anyone who wants a slower, quieter stay than a full resort spa. Its wellness programming, called "With the Elements", is built around yoga and guided meditation. The inn lists a daily yoga class at 8:30am that is complimentary for hotel guests and Pond Club members and $25 for day guests, mixing dynamic and therapeutic postures with restorative stretches, plus meditation sessions focused on concentration and awareness. Check which sessions are running when you book, as the inn's beach and bathhouse services are seasonal and its midweek offers change through the year. More at weekapauginn.com.

4. Providence Zen Center, Cumberland

The Providence Zen Center at 99 Pound Road in Cumberland is the head temple of the Kwan Um School of Zen, and it has hosted the intensive Kyol Che retreat at its Diamond Hill Monastery for more than 40 years. It is the place in Rhode Island for real silent practice, and it has a clear ladder for newcomers:

  • Free newcomer instruction on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings.
  • One-day retreats, 9am to 4pm, of sitting and walking meditation with a vegetarian lunch and interviews with a Zen teacher; first-timers have an orientation at 8:15am.
  • Kido chanting retreats, built around the chant to Kwan Seum Bosal, the bodhisattva of compassion.
  • Yong Maeng Jong Jin ("to leap like a tiger while sitting"), silent retreats of two, three or seven days with bowing, chanting, sitting, walking meditation and work periods. Overnight accommodation is included in the retreat cost.
  • Kyol Che, traditionally 30 days in summer and 90 days in winter, which requires previous retreat experience in the Kwan Um school.

If a structured retreat is too much, a temple stay of one to 31 nights lets you join the daily practice on your own schedule. Rates, per person with breakfast and shared bathrooms, are $80 a night in a hostel-style double or triple room, $130 in a single, and $75 for the Hermitage, a studio cabin with a camp kitchen whose availability is limited. A month in a single room is $1,800. Check in between 9am and 5pm so you can join evening practice. Retreat dates are on the center's calendar at providencezen.org.

Planning a wellness trip in Rhode Island

  • Pair coast and temple. Watch Hill to Cumberland is about an hour's drive, so a few nights of silent practice can sit alongside a spa night by the sea.
  • Book spa treatments before the room. Coastal inns fill up in summer, and treatment slots on Saturdays go first.
  • Choose the season. Summer brings beach services and the Castle Hill yoga program; autumn and winter are quieter on the coast, and the long Kyol Che retreat runs in winter.
  • Know what a silent retreat asks of you. Our guide to what a silent retreat is like explains the etiquette, and how much a meditation retreat costs puts the Zen Center's rates in context.
