The Best Wellness Retreats in New Jersey: Four Picks, From a Mountain Spa Resort to a Retreat House on the Ocean
The best wellness retreats in New Jersey split neatly between the hills and the shore. In the northwest, a resort in the Appalachian foothills of Sussex County runs two full spas, indoor pools and a schedule of meditation, breathwork and forest bathing. Down the coast, a bayside hotel in Stone Harbor has a two-level salt spa, Cape May's historic Congress Hall has a seaside spa, and on the ocean at Long Branch a retreat house that has hosted retreats for a century offers silent, directed weeks. We checked all four against their own websites in October 2026. New Jersey has few dedicated, multi-day wellness retreat centers, so most of these are spa stays you shape yourself.
The four at a glance
| Retreat | Where | Best for | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crystal Springs Resort | Sussex County, northwest NJ | A full spa resort with wellness classes | Hotel rates, spa packages or a day pass |
| The Reeds at Shelter Haven | Stone Harbor, Jersey Shore | A salt spa and bayside hotel | Hotel rates plus spa treatments |
| Congress Hall | Cape May | Spa days by the beach in a historic town | Hotel rates plus spa treatments |
| San Alfonso Retreat House | Long Branch, on the ocean | Silent and spiritual retreats | Per-retreat program fees |
1. Crystal Springs Resort, Sussex County
Crystal Springs, set among three golf courses in the Appalachian foothills of Sussex County and marketed as a getaway near New York City, is the most complete wellness stay in the state. It has two hotels and two spas: the Grand Cascades Lodge, a AAA four-diamond property, houses the more glamorous Reflections Spa, while the Minerals Hotel has the calmer Elements Spa. Spa and pool day packages include all-day access to the Tropical Biosphere Pool Complex at Reflections or the Minerals pools at Elements, plus credit for treatments and a meal. What lifts it above a standard spa hotel is the resort wellness program: individual and group sessions in mindful meditation and breathwork, forest bathing and crystal bowl sound healing, and workshops on making kombucha, herbal teas and essential oils. The Elements Spa evening package, for example, pairs a $150 spa credit with $70 toward dinner at Kites Restaurant. Check the program schedule before you book a weekend, as classes vary week to week.
2. The Reeds at Shelter Haven, Stone Harbor
The Reeds sits at 9601 Third Avenue in Stone Harbor, on the bay side of a quiet barrier island at the southern end of the Jersey Shore. Its Salt Spa spreads across two levels with a brine lounge and a Turkish bath alongside the massage and facial rooms, a blow-out bar, nail studio and a fitness center with Technogym equipment. The spa is open daily from 9am to 5pm and runs seasonal treatments; in October and November 2026 that means a limited autumn menu. Away from the spa, the hotel offers morning yoga on the roof garden, paddleboarding and kayaking on the basin, and full beach service. Spa and stay packages bundle a $100 spa credit with the room.
3. Congress Hall, Cape May
Congress Hall, at 200 Congress Place, calls itself America's first seaside resort, and the yellow hotel with its long white colonnade, pictured above, is a Cape May landmark a short walk from the beach. The Sea Spa has cabana-style treatment rooms with yellow stripes, a nod to the beach, and a menu inspired by the ocean, using products from OSEA, BABOR, Kneipp and Shore Skin + Home, a local maker in Cape May whose products are vegan and handmade in small batches. Treatments are by appointment, from 9am to 5:30pm Saturday to Thursday and until 6:30pm on Friday; a 25-minute foot massage was $95 at the time of writing. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead or pay a $100 no-show charge. Cape May's Victorian streets, beaches and birding make it easy to build a slow weekend around a single treatment.
4. San Alfonso Retreat House, Long Branch
For a retreat in the older sense of the word, San Alfonso, at 755 Ocean Avenue in Long Branch, is a Catholic retreat house run by the Redemptorists on the Atlantic shore, which marked 100 years of retreat ministry in 2025. It runs a published schedule of themed retreats with talks, liturgies and time for quiet, and it welcomes people on private retreats who want to use the chapels, reading rooms, shrines and grounds on their own. Twice a year it holds silent directed retreats that run from Sunday to Sunday, with each retreatant paired with a director for the week. The 2026 program is open for registration on its website. The setting is explicitly spiritual, so read the description of each retreat before you book.
How to choose
- For a structured wellness weekend, Crystal Springs is the only one of the four with a regular class schedule beyond spa treatments.
- For the sea air, pick The Reeds if you want a modern hotel and the bay, or Congress Hall if you prefer a historic town with plenty to walk to.
- For silence or prayer, San Alfonso is the clear choice; see also our guide to the best Christian retreats in the USA.
