The best wellness retreats in Massachusetts are packed into a remarkably small piece of the state. Four of the five below are in the Berkshires, and three of those are in one town, Lenox, within a few minutes of each other. That concentration is not an accident: the Gilded Age left the hills full of enormous private estates, and the ones that were not demolished became schools, arts venues and, eventually, the densest cluster of destination wellness properties in the Northeast.

What makes the choice hard is that these places look similar from the outside and work completely differently once you are inside. One is a nonprofit center where you follow a program. Two are all-inclusive luxury resorts. One is an eco-village with an art gallery. One is a silent meditation center that will ask about your practice history before it takes your booking. Here is what each is actually for.

Stockbridge

Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health

The largest yoga and health retreat center in North America, on Interlaken Road in Stockbridge, and the default answer for a first serious retreat in the Northeast. Kripalu runs on two tracks. Retreat and Renewal is the open format: you turn up, and each day offers yoga, movement, workshops and hikes that you can take or ignore, at your own pace. The other track is structured programs, taught by visiting faculty, plus its four schools covering yoga, Ayurveda, mindful outdoor leadership and integrative yoga therapy.

Who it suits: someone who wants substance rather than pampering. Accommodations are plain by design, from dormitory-style rooms up to private rooms with a view over the lake, and meals are served buffet-style. It is a nonprofit, and it feels like one. Day passes and an online studio exist if you want to test it first.

Lenox

Canyon Ranch Lenox

The original of the type. Canyon Ranch has been doing integrative wellness for more than forty years, and its Lenox property is built around the Bellefontaine Mansion, a Gilded Age house on Kemble Street. The model is all-inclusive: chef-crafted dining, a large spa, 35 or more daily activities, health consultations with clinicians, fitness and movement programming, and round-trip transportation. The Michelin Guide named it the number one spa resort in New England in 2025.

Who it suits: someone who wants the health-assessment side taken seriously, with consultations and diagnostics alongside the spa, and who would rather have everything bundled than pick from a menu. It also runs named retreats led by outside experts through the calendar, so check whether a themed week overlaps your dates.

Miraval Berkshires

The newest of the three Lenox properties and the most designed. Miraval Berkshires sits on 380 acres of rolling hills and open land, runs on inclusive packages, and organizes its programming around the seasons: restoring in winter, renewing in spring, creating in summer, resetting in fall. Guided experiences and spa treatments are the core, and the property is part of the Hyatt group, so loyalty points work here in a way they do not at Kripalu.

Who it suits: someone who wants the resort experience with mindfulness built into it rather than bolted on, and who values space. The acreage is the differentiator against Canyon Ranch a mile away; the programming is softer and less clinical.

Eastover Estate & Eco-Village

The outlier, and the interesting one. Eastover is on East Street in Lenox, minutes from downtown, and it is not a resort at all: it is a retreat estate and community with yoga studios, meditation rooms, conference space and a commercial kitchen, hosting workshops and group events rather than selling packaged stays. Accommodations run from rooms in the mansion and the ranch house down to cottages and camping.

Two things set it apart. It operates a chemical-free water recycling system and describes itself as an eco-village and a non-religious spiritual community open to long-term stays. And it runs a contemporary art gallery with an artist residency program, with trails leading straight from the property into October Mountain State Forest.

Who it suits: people who want a retreat with a community around it, groups looking for a venue, and anyone whose budget rules out the two resorts. Check what is scheduled before you book, because the calendar is driven by visiting teachers and events.

Barre, central Massachusetts

Insight Meditation Society

Two adjacent centers on close to 400 wooded acres a little over two miles north of the town of Barre, and the most serious meditation option in the state by a wide margin. The Retreat Center has offered structured silent courses since 1976, with a yearly schedule of more than thirty of them running from a weekend to three months. The Forest Refuge, open since 2003, is for experienced practitioners on longer solo retreat, taking stays from seven nights up to a year or more in single rooms beside a meditation hall in the woods.

Who it suits: anyone who wants silence rather than a spa. The Retreat Center takes new meditators on its shorter courses. The Forest Refuge does not: applicants are expected to have completed at least one six-week teacher-led insight meditation retreat, or six one-week retreats. If you have never done this, our guide to what a silent retreat actually involves is the place to start.

How to choose between them

Start with what you want the days to feel like. If you want to be told what to do, Kripalu or a silent course at Barre. If you want to be looked after, Canyon Ranch or Miraval. If you want somewhere to run your own group or stay a while cheaply, Eastover.

Then check the calendar rather than the property. Every one of these places changes character with what is scheduled that week, and the same room can sit inside a beginners' yoga retreat or an advanced training. Finally, budget honestly: the gap between an all-inclusive week in Lenox and a course at Barre is enormous. Our breakdown of what a wellness retreat costs sets out the ranges, and the wider East Coast roundup covers the neighboring states.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the best wellness retreats in Massachusetts?

Almost all of them are in the Berkshires, in the western third of the state. Lenox alone holds Canyon Ranch, Miraval Berkshires and Eastover, and Kripalu is a few minutes away in Stockbridge. The main exception is the Insight Meditation Society, which is in Barre in central Massachusetts, about halfway between the Berkshires and Boston.

What is the difference between Kripalu and Canyon Ranch?

Kripalu is a nonprofit yoga and health center where the product is the program: Retreat and Renewal stays, teacher trainings and its four schools, in simple accommodations. Canyon Ranch Lenox is an all-inclusive luxury resort built around a spa, health consultations and 35 or more daily activities. Very different prices and very different rooms, for a broadly similar goal.

Is Miraval Berkshires all-inclusive?

Yes. Miraval Berkshires in Lenox runs on inclusive packages, with programming that changes across the seasons and restorative spa treatments and guided experiences included or credited rather than billed piecemeal. It sits on 380 acres and is part of the Hyatt group.

Can you do a silent retreat in Massachusetts?

Yes, and one of the best known in the country is here. The Insight Meditation Society near Barre has run structured silent meditation courses since 1976, from a weekend to three months, on almost 400 wooded acres. Its neighboring Forest Refuge takes experienced meditators for stays of seven nights to a year or more.

When is the best time of year to visit the Berkshires?

September and October for foliage, which is also when rooms are hardest to get and priciest. Summer is busy because of Tanglewood and the arts season. Late winter and early spring are the quiet months, the cheapest, and often the best value if the point of the trip is rest rather than scenery.

Do I need experience to book a retreat here?

Not for most of them. Kripalu, Canyon Ranch, Miraval and Eastover all take complete beginners. The one exception is the Forest Refuge at Barre, which asks applicants to have completed at least one six-week teacher-led insight meditation retreat, or six comparable one-week retreats, before applying.
