The Best Wellness Retreats in Illinois: Four Picks, From a Prairie Mansion to a Galena Spa Resort
The best wellness retreats in Illinois are mostly do-it-yourself stays rather than packaged programs. The state has a 1900 country mansion run by the University of Illinois where you can sleep among 33 guest rooms in sculpture gardens and woods, a Galena golf resort with a new 12,000-square-foot spa, a resort spa near O'Hare with an indoor pool and sauna, and a 200-acre retreat center outside Rockford for groups. We checked all four against their own websites in October 2026. One name you will still see on older lists is missing: Heartland Spa in Gilman, the state's best-known all-inclusive fitness spa, whose website now forwards to a domain-for-sale page.

1. Allerton Park & Retreat Center, Monticello
515 Old Timber Road, Monticello, IL 61856. Robert Allerton, an artist and philanthropist, finished his mansion here in 1900, and the estate now belongs to the University of Illinois, about 25 miles from Champaign. It is the most restorative place to stay in the state if what you want is quiet: formal gardens, sculpture, prairie and river woodland to walk, and no spa schedule to keep. There are 33 guest rooms across the estate: 17 in the Mansion with antique furnishings, eight in the House in the Woods half a mile away, six in the Gatehouse and two pet-friendly rooms in the Evergreen Lodge, plus The Residence with a kitchenette. Coffee is served in the Mansion Solarium each morning; for meals, the Greenhouse Café opens seasonally, you can bring a cooler, or drive five miles to Monticello.
The best-value way in is a Weekend Wind Down, when the Mansion opens to the public on selected nights with a cash bar, lawn games by the Koi Pond, live music and folk school classes, and overnight guests pay a discounted $110 a night plus tax, with two drinks per room per night. The estate also runs events such as astrology evenings and candlelight programs. Book on the website or call 217-333-3287.
2. Eagle Ridge Golf Resort & Spa, Galena
444 Eagle Ridge Drive, Galena, IL 61036. Galena, a 19th-century river town in the hills of the northwest corner of the state, is Illinois's classic weekend escape, and Eagle Ridge is its big resort. The reason to come for wellness is the Stonedrift Spa, which has moved into a remodeled standalone building beside the Inn and grown from 3,500 to more than 12,000 square feet. The menu covers massage, body treatments, facials using Eminence Organic products, dry salt and halo therapy, a couple's room, nails and a salon. Spa hours are Monday to Thursday 9am to 4pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sunday 9am to 2pm; book on 815-776-5772. Pair a treatment with a walk round Galena's historic Main Street.
3. Eaglewood Resort & Spa, Itasca
1401 Nordic Road, Itasca, IL 60143. For Chicagoans who want a spa night without the drive, Eaglewood sits in the western suburbs close to O'Hare. Spa guests get robe, slippers, locker and a tranquility room with light snacks, tea and infused water, plus use of the fitness center, a 25-meter naturally lit indoor pool, a wood sauna and an indoor jetted hot tub. A 60-minute massage costs $175 and 90 minutes $250, with gratuity included. The spa is for ages 18 and up and is closed on Mondays; it opens Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm. Call 630-694-5903 to book.
4. Bishop Lane Retreat Center, near Rockford
7708 East McGregor Road, Rockford, IL 61102. Bishop Lane is a retreat and conference center on more than 200 acres of landscaped and wooded grounds, five miles southwest of Rockford and 60 to 90 minutes from Chicago. It is not a spa and does not run a public program (its events page was empty when we checked); it is a quiet, air-conditioned base for a church group, a yoga teacher's weekend or a team that wants to plan its own retreat. Contact the center on 815-965-5011 for availability and rates.

If you want a structured, all-inclusive program with classes and meals, Illinois has little to offer now that Heartland Spa's website has gone, and neighboring states are the better bet; see our guides to the best wellness retreats in Wisconsin and Michigan.
