The Best Wellness Retreats in Idaho, From Lake Spas to Off-Grid Hot Springs
The best wellness retreats in Idaho are less about yoga studios and more about water: a lakeside resort spa in Coeur d'Alene, a spa built around boulder-lined soaking pools on Payette Lake, and genuine geothermal hot springs in the mountains, some reached only by snowmobile in winter. Central Idaho also has one of the darkest night skies in the United States. We checked each place below against its own website in October 2026. Here are six to consider, what each is like and who it suits.
For a full-service resort spa: The Coeur d'Alene Resort or Shore Lodge in McCall.
For natural hot springs: Burgdorf Hot Springs near McCall, or the private spring tubs at Mountain Village Resort in Stanley.
For stars and silence: Stanley and Sun Valley, inside the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve.
1. The Coeur d'Alene Resort Spa, Coeur d'Alene
The resort's spa sits at lobby level in the hotel on the north shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene, a short drive from Spokane airport over the Washington border. Treatment guests get the indoor pool and whirlpools, an infrared dry sauna, a fitness centre and a lakeside meditation room. The spa is open daily from 8am to 8pm. The resort also runs seasonal "Live Well" overnight retreats that pair a room with a spa treatment and, on some dates, yoga; check the resort's site for the current themes and prices. The resort says its spa has been on Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List of top resort spas for four consecutive years.
Best for: an easy, polished spa weekend with a lake view and no need for a car once you arrive. cdaresort.com
2. Shore Lodge and The Cove spa, McCall
Shore Lodge has stood on the shore of Payette Lake in McCall since 1948, about two and a half hours' drive north of Boise. Its spa, The Cove, is the main draw for a wellness stay: two heated saltwater immersion pools built from local boulders to resemble hot springs, reserved for guests booking treatments, plus an indoor pool and a steam room. It is a resort rather than a programme-led retreat, so you build your own days around the spa, the lake and the forest trails.
Best for: couples who want a lakeside spa with a mountain-lodge feel.
3. Burgdorf Hot Springs, near McCall
For something entirely different, Burgdorf Hot Springs sits 32 miles north of McCall in the Payette National Forest. It has three historic log-sided pools with gravel bottoms: the two small pools at the source run at about 113°F, while the larger pool averages 96 to 113°F depending on the season. Overnight guests stay in rustic cabins with no running water or electricity, so it is closer to camping indoors than a hotel. Everything, including day swims, must be booked online in advance; public swims run from 10am to 6pm six days a week and the springs close on Wednesdays.
Timing matters. From June to November you can drive in along Warren Wagon Road; from December to April the only access is by snowmobile. If you want a road trip, go before the snow closes the road.

4. Mountain Village Resort, Stanley
Stanley, under the Sawtooth Mountains, is a tiny town with a big landscape. Mountain Village Resort combines a lodge with private hot spring soaking. Lodge room guests get free access to the Osprey Hot Spring, which holds up to eight people, and anyone can rent the Bluebird or Sandhill Crane spring tubs, 8ft by 8ft and for up to ten people, at $50 for two plus $5 per extra guest. Bookings run on the hour: one-hour slots for Osprey from 7am to 10pm and 90-minute slots for the other two from 7am to 8pm. The springs are a five to fifteen minute walk from the lodge, depending on snow.
Stanley lies within the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, so an evening soak under a clear sky is the highlight. The resort keeps its own lighting low for that reason.

5. Sun Valley Resort, Sun Valley
Sun Valley, built by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1936 and often described as America's first destination ski resort, is a year-round base for an active, restorative trip. The Spa at Sun Valley offers massages, facials and body treatments, with a 2,300 sq ft fitness centre and movement studio running group classes and three outdoor pools. In summer and autumn the trails around Ketchum and the Wood River Valley are the real therapy; in winter it is a ski resort first. Like Stanley, the area is within the dark sky reserve.

6. Schweitzer and the Cambium Spa, Sandpoint
In the far north, Schweitzer ski area above Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille has its own spa, the Cambium Spa, in the resort village. It is a good add-on to a ski or summer mountain trip rather than a retreat in its own right, but Sandpoint itself is a relaxed small town and the lake is beautiful in early autumn.

Planning an Idaho wellness trip
- Distances are long. Boise to Stanley is around three hours by road, and McCall to Coeur d'Alene is five hours or more. Pick one region rather than trying to see the whole state.
- Season changes everything. Mountain roads and hot springs that are easy in September can need winter tyres, chains or a snowmobile by December.
- Book soaks in advance. Both Burgdorf and Mountain Village run on reservations, and walk-ups are not guaranteed.
- Check medical advice first. Burgdorf asks anyone with medical conditions to check whether hot water immersion is safe for them, and the same applies to any hot pool.
