The Best Wellness Retreats in Alabama: Three Picks, From a Benedictine Silent Stay to an Abbey Retreat Center and a Mobile Bay Spa

The best wellness retreats in Alabama come from two very different traditions. In Cullman, north of Birmingham, two Benedictine communities, one of sisters and one of monks, have welcomed retreatants for generations: one offers private silent stays from $75 a night, the other a 46-room retreat center beside its famous grotto. On the coast at Point Clear, the Grand Hotel, a resort since 1847, runs a 20,000 square foot spa with a $100 weekday day pass. Here is what each offers, who it suits and how to book, checked in October 2026.

1. Sacred Heart Monastery Retreat Center, Cullman

Cullman, north Alabama, about 50 miles north of Birmingham. The Benedictine Sisters of Cullman run a retreat center at their monastery on Convent Road. Their private retreat is described simply as a time of silence and solitude to seek God in prayer: you read, journal, walk the grounds and visit the chapel, and you can join the sisters for the Liturgy of the Hours and the Eucharist if you want to. Nothing is scheduled for you beyond that.

  • Cost: $100 for the first night and $75 for each additional night.
  • Rooms: a private room with private bath, plus a shared common area and kitchenette with a small fridge (two rooms do not have kitchenette access).
  • Meals: served cafeteria-style, with a silent dining area. Ask when you book what the nightly rate covers.
  • Who can go: men and women. The sisters say silence and solitude generally suit people in their early 20s or older; 18 to 21 year olds are considered case by case with a letter of support from a pastor or spiritual director.
  • Booking: use the online private retreat inquiry form or contact the retreat office on (256) 734-8302 or retreats@shmon.org, with your preferred dates and at least two alternatives. The office usually replies within one business day.

The center also runs scheduled programmes and hosts group retreats; its upcoming programmes page lists what is on. If you have never spent days in silence, our explainer on what a silent retreat is covers what to expect.

2. St. Bernard Retreat and Conference Center, Cullman

On the other side of Cullman, at Alabama’s only Benedictine abbey. The monks of St. Bernard Abbey run a two-storey Retreat and Conference Center beside the monastery. It has 46 rooms, each with two twin beds, a private bath and its own temperature control, plus two accessible rooms with a queen bed. There is a large meeting room seating up to 80 and a smaller one for up to 16.

  • Best for: parish groups, school retreats, ministry teams and organised weekends. The abbey no longer has rooms inside the monastery for guests, so this is the way to stay.
  • Booking: through the reservation inquiry form on the abbey’s website, or by calling the retreat center staff on 256-734-3946.
  • Nearby: the Ave Maria Grotto, a four-acre park in the abbey’s former quarry filled with miniature replicas of famous buildings, from Montserrat to St. Peter’s Basilica, made by Brother Joseph Zoettl, a monk of the abbey. Visitors have come since 1934. In 2026 its Christmas lights run on selected dates from 19 November to 27 December, with adult admission at $12.

3. The Spa at the Grand Hotel, Point Clear

On the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. The Grand Hotel Golf Resort and Spa, now part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, has stood at Point Clear in some form since 1847. It has 405 rooms and suites, 36 holes of golf at Lakewood Golf Club on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, pools and a marina, but the reason to come for a wellness break is the 20,000 square foot spa.

  • Facilities: indoor pool, fitness center, dry sauna, steam room, whirlpool and a relaxation room.
  • Using it as a hotel guest: booking a massage or facial of 50 minutes or longer includes full use of the spa facility for the day, with locker, robe and sandals.
  • Day pass: available Monday to Thursday for $100 plus tax, covering the steam rooms, sauna, whirlpools, relaxation room, indoor pool and fitness center, with a complimentary drink.
  • Age: guests must be at least 16 to use the spa facilities.

The spa also runs occasional classes, such as sound bowl meditation in the indoor pool. Book treatments well ahead for spring and summer weekends. For more secular spa breaks across the region, see our best wellness retreats in the Southeast.
