Ideas for Outdoor Programs and Environmental Learning Schools

  • Prepare your students in advance for the conditions and what they will be expected to do. For instance, if they will be collecting water samples, make sure they have additional shoes to change into.
  • Each student needs a field journal, a writing instrument and some clear packing tape. While out on the trail identify the plants, journal about where you found it and draw pictures. Having the journal with you will allow record things accurately. The kids will really love gathering a bit of dirt from the location of collection, spitting on it and rubbing some of it onto the page with the plant they have identified. This creates an opportunity to teach about different soil types in a way they will never forget!
  • Build in time for students to share at least one thing that they have learned.
